Title: Bear on the Moon | By Oxana Kostromina from Germany/Russia.
The pick of the month is this lovely image that reminds me of “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It’s one of my favorite stories. This image shows a bear instead of a prince, yet still it conveys quite well the feeling of being in a vast and wondrous place, alone. When I read the biography of the author of the novella I felt sad at the state of the world affairs which led him to take that fateful flight…

Titled: Southern December | By Suety Kwan from USA | Text: December
My desktop calendar wallpaper for December is an ode to the non-snowy winter weather here in LA (and the southern hemisphere). I like the muted tones, and the crisp focus on the water reminds me of my post-triathlon training drives along PCH on early Saturday afternoons this past summer. It serves to pull me out of any cold and possibly inclement weather I may experience, at least for a few moments.
I know I’ve been saying for awhile that I am inspired to make one of these wallpapers, so I’ll go ahead and make that one of my creative goals for 2012.

Titled: A Clearing in the Foggy Forest | By Alberto Varela | Text: a clearing in the foggy forest
This is my desktop wallpaper for November. I can’t escape fact that forests remind me of fairy tales. Full of untold stories. Discovery. Escape. All of which remind me of fiction, which is what I’m writing this month. I like how the foggy haze turns the trees into a translucent patch just feet above the ground, creating a sense of unknown in the clearing. I am not sure what that little green “easter egg” is by the large tree in the left half of background. Perhaps there’s a story behind it…

October desktop wallpaper

I love that this is apple season. I am certainly an apple fan for all its dessert and beverage possibilities, though I prefer green varieties when eaten whole— perhaps w/ peanut butter.

This month’s wallpaper pick is from Italian design group www.greyarea.it. This image alone would inspire me to get a jump on my Fall hobbies and DIY projects if I hadn’t already spied my skeins of crochet yarn in my closet earlier today.

My desktop wallpaper for September. I like the crispness of the landscape and the natural skylight.

Titled: Before the Fall | By Eject Studio | Text: “before the Fall”
A macro shot with lots of light, plus a moment captured in time. My desktop wallpaper for August reminds me that I should get a digital camera— my old one was stolen— instead of relying solely on my cell phone’s blurry and slow-to-react shutter. It also reminds me that even things that are broken can have moments of beauty.

My desktop wallpaper for July is called Summer Nights by Mandi Coleman. I like it for three reasons. The first is that it reminds me of Alice in Wonderland’s tea party scene, which I’ve seen dozens of times, though it still makes no more sense to me after each viewing than the last. You know what doesn’t make sense in this wallpaper? The lack of an extension chord for those lights in the tree. How did they do it?
Reason number two is that it looks like a fun dinner party that I would like to attend. I used to attend a rotating host group dinner every month or maybe it was every other week. Eventually too many people moved away and so it fizzled out. Those were some good times and I met a lot of people at those dinners that I still spend significant amounts of my free time with these days.
Third reason is that I was sick (again this year!) during the 4th of July and saw fireworks only via random attention grabbing explosion through one window or another. The ones pictured here help form mental images of what it might have been like to be outside, witnessing the sound and all of the colors of streaking fire at once.
Real life. It’s full of bright colors for me, which is another reason why I am drawn to this image for my computer background. Sometimes you just need to rest your eyes on something dark and calming, you know?

My desktop wallpaper for June.
Titled: Serenity | By Daily Overview | Text: “Silence is a privilege”
I have kept a couple of apps open on my screen more often than not lately so it’s been a pleasant surprise to see this image whenever I finally close or minimize everything.
What I like best is the color scheme. The colors of the sky blend into the gray clouds, eventually transitioning to the brilliantly lit green landscape. It works to carry the eye downward and then off into the distance. The lone line of text something to ponder and overall this makes for an aptly-named piece of art.

“Explore. Dream. Discover.” This is my desktop wallpaper for May. The subdued tones, fonts and the quote used give a sense of calm and whimsical possibility. The print overlay over the wood stripe on the right has a cute little face bordering the calendar on a horizontal axis. Imagery featuring the open road is always a plus as well. I didn’t change my desktop wallpaper last month because I went with one of the included wallpaper displays on my new lappy, but if I had I would have gone with this one called “April Showers” from Smashing Mag. I think it’s fun and quirky— that weird bright blue color notwithstanding. I appreciate the integration of QR codes blended with an ‘if it rains it pours’ approach. This would have made for a good theme for April, which for me blended technology, social media, a little rain and a lot of interesting conversations.
